An Interview With Bird

June 7, 2019

YOU ARE JUST BACK FROM NASHVILLE. HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE?
It's always been an ambition of mine to work there and it did not disappoint - the musicians were absolutely fantastic out there - it's an inspiring environment to work in.

THAT TRIP WAS PART OF THE PROCESS FOR THE RECORDING OF THE NEW ALBUM THAT HAS ALSO TAKEN IN L.A. AND TOKYO THIS YEAR. HOW IS IT ALL GOING?
Getting to see so many parts of the world while writing, creating, is an incredible opportunity. Each part of the journey has been exciting and productive - I've met and worked with some amazing people so I feel very lucky.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE NEW ALBUM?
It definitely feels like a new chapter for Bird but it's definitely also a continuation - there are lots of elements fans will recognise from the previous albums but it is definitely a departure too in some ways - taking the decision to collaborate has of course helped take the music somewhere new and exciting...I'm very happy with how it'a progressing - it's a very honest album - lyrically probably the most personal album I have written.

YOU ARE WORKING WITH ONE OF THE BEST PRODUCERS IN THE BUSINESS, MIKE HEDGES. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?
I worked with Mike playing cello on an album he was producing years ago - we reconnected a couple of years back and bonded over a mutual desire to create an album the public deserved - using our craft instead of fake instruments recorded in a digital box - people are not getting a fair musical experience most of the time anymore...so this is all about real musicians and instruments recorded how they used to be - but this is not a trad or folk album, there's plenty of programming too but everything is organic - every sound recorded from something we have seen and heard, lots of analogue synths, thanks to having a great skilled team around me.

HOW HAS WORKING WITH MIKE IMPACTED ON THE WAY THAT YOU ARE WRITING AND RECORDING THIS ALBUM?
Working with someone as experienced and successful as Mike has been a great opportunity, I've learnt something new literally every day we've spent together which I am incredibly grateful for as it is inevitably making me a better musician - Mike's also just a lovely person to hang with.

ARE YOU ABLE TO TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE OTHER PEOPLE YOU ARE WORKING WITH?
Our programmer is Pete Davis - a total sonic genius, then I'm co-writing with some fantastic musicians including John Paul White (The Civil Wars), Hal Lindes (Dire Straits) and James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers).

WHEN DO YOU THINK WE WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR THE NEW TRACKS?
Still on the journey so you'll have to just be patient!

ARE YOU PLANNING TO PLAY LIVE ANY TIME SOON?
I am concentrating on recording for at least the next six months - I want this to be the best thing I've ever worked on - and that takes a lot of commitment but I'll be back playing live when we've finished.
